Tsuyoshi Niwa is
Experienced Japanese Jazz Saxophonist/Composer in New York City
Tsuyoshi Niwa, a jazz saxophonist with over three decades of experience, possesses a unique musicality reflected in his exceptional tones and improvisational approach. Starting with trumpet and trombone at a young age, he found his lifelong passion in the alto saxophone at 15.
Arriving in NYC at 23, Tsuyoshi studied jazz at the New School, shaping his skills and performing at iconic venues like Knitting Factory. Mentored by saxophonist George Garzone, he developed a distinctive sound on the soprano saxophone. Notable collaborations include an album with Italian singer Amalia Gre and a successful tour in Italy.
Returning to NYC in 2011, Tsuyoshi gained acclaim at global venues and obtained an artist visa. Collaborating with Niwa Trio and Noshir Mody Group, he recorded original compositions with Grammy winners. The third NYC phase, starting in 2019, showcases his performances at various jazz establishments, where he seamlessly blends his originals with classic jazz standards.
Fluent in multiple instruments like bass clarinet, flute, soprano, and tenor saxophones, Tsuyoshi's 'doubling' reflects his musical multilingualism. Beyond jazz venues, his versatile music resonates in diverse settings, illustrating his commitment to musical growth over superficial success.
